History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

6. Which migrant group had the biggest impact on early Scotland?

Whilst the previous four lessons have looked at migration to ‘Britain’ as a whole, this enquiry focuses on the impact of four different migrant groups in early Scotland.

The main activity centres upon a ‘balloon debate’, and students are given the task of determining which of the four ‘people’ on board (a Gael, a Pict, an Anglo-Saxon and a Viking) deserves to remain on the sinking hot-air balloon.

This is based on the significance of the migrant group to which they belong.

Students gather evidence about the four groups, focusing on the migrants’ impact on language, place names, and beliefs and culture.

Students outline their final conclusions, before they are guided to do some sophisticated thinking about similarity and difference.
