History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

5. What impact did the climate have on Viking culture?

This lesson focuses on the second-order historical concept of consequence.

It explores the various impacts brought about by the climate and environment.

Students investigate the ways in which sport and entertainment, food, dress and house-building were affected by the climate and environment.

Next they  identify similarities and differences with life in Celtic Britain.

Students end the lesson by creating museum exhibitions for the ‘Climate House’ at the National Museum of Norway.

They select images to represent aspects of Viking culture, and write an overview for the exhibition based on their new understanding of the relationship between the climate and cultural life.
