1. Is the Traditional Western perspective of the Ottoman Empire accurate?

This lesson aims to develop students’ understanding of how the Ottoman Empire has been represented in traditional Western narratives, and how accurate these portrayals really are.

Students begin by exploring the stereotypical Western view of the empire.

They interrogate visual sources to see how this perspective has been reinforced over time.

Then they study a written overview of Ottoman history to test the accuracy of that view.

By comparing the Western narrative with evidence from the empire’s own history, students are encouraged to form a nuanced historical judgement.
