Who was the best Medieval Monarch? An overview

In this overview lesson, you introduce your students to all of the kings of England from 1066-1485.  Can they work out from the information you give them who was the best medieval monarch?

You start by introducing the famous chronicler, Matthew Paris and show some of his famous drawings of English kings. Using these you establish the criteria your students will use to judge how good different monarchs were.

Next, your students will be testing a number of hypotheses about medieval monarchs using an overview table that charts all Kings from William to Henry VII.

They end with the classic wheel of fortune, explaining who they think were the three most successful and who were the three least successful monarchs of the period.

This enquiry fits in to the Medieval Power unit and provides a neat overview for the period.
