8. Can we solve the mystery of the lost Viking settlement on Greenland?

This lesson uses a classic ‘mystery’ approach.

Students study a range of clues in their mission to work out what might have caused the ‘disappearance’ of the Viking settlement on Greenland.

They consider the impact of various factors, including cooling temperatures, rising sea levels, a failure to adapt to different hunting practices, and risky hunting journeys.

They are then  challenged to explain exactly how or why these different factors might have caused the disappearance of the Vikings on Greenland.

Finally, students must reach conclusions, explaining how factors or causes worked together – and which cause (or causes) might have been most important.
