This enquiry helps students to appreciate the impressive interconnectedness of the African kingdoms during the period we know as ‘medieval’.

First, students are asked to predict which of three products – salt, gold or cowrie shells – was most ‘valuable’ at the time.

Next,  they plot the movement of these products within and outside Africa on a map, making use of a range of contemporary sources.

Students then consider the question of ‘value’ in more detail, exploring the reasons why salt, gold and cowrie shells were important/impactful during this period.

Finally, students are tasked with writing letters to a West African ruler, advising him on the product(s) around which he ought to base his economic policy, and the benefits of this approach.
