History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

What were peasants’ lives really like?

Peasant lifeThis enquiry challenges some of the misconceptions students are likely to have about medieval peasantry. By doing so, it aims to develop their appreciation of historical evidence in a compelling and engaging way.

First, you will get your students to complete a survey which is designed to draw out their misconceptions.

Next, you will show them an email from previous classes who thought that medieval life was awful.

They then use evidence including the Luttrell Psalter to find out what life was really like – two alternative pathways are provided here, one highly active.

Now knowledge-rich, your students can them come back earlier misconceptions and challenge them.
