History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

Was ‘the appearance and state of the world’ changed during the early modern period? (Overview)

This enquiry offers students the opportunity to gain an overview understanding of the key events of the early modern period.

By means of a card sort, students organise key developments and events from the period into chronological order: this enables them to make judgements about the time that saw the greatest change.

Students take their investigation a step further by considering why the changes had such a big impact, drawing on significance criteria.

Finally, they explain how far they agree with 17th-century writer Francis Bacon’s view of the biggest developments of the period.
