Should Peter Sanderson move to Manchester in the 1850s?

Manchester

This enquiry uses the personal story to help your students understand a general trend in the 19th Century: moving from rural districts to the rapidly expanding towns.

Starting with a rural view of Manchester in 1820 and then showing the same view nearly 40 years later, can you students spot what has changed?

Next Lancashire lad Peter Sanderson is introduced. Your class has to decide whether or not he should move from rural Lancashire to urban Manchester in the middle of the century.

Having weighed up the pros and cons of rural then urban life, your students then argue about what Peter should do.
