Migration 23: Were lascar sailors really ‘the most exploited vagabonds of the sea’?

This enquiry focuses on the experiences of lascar sailors, a migrant group whose experiences were shaped by the activities of the growing British Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Students are introduced to an historian’s interpretation, and use evidence to support and challenge the historian’s claim about lascar sailors being ‘the most exploited vagabonds of the sea’.

Finally, they respond to the interpretation, summing up what they have learned. Classic!
