History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

9. Year 8 – Why did the Mughal Empire decline in the 1700s?

This lesson focuses on some high-level causation work.

Its format – based on a ‘Top Trumps’ game – is engaging, and doesn’t require a great deal of writing.

Students are given a set of Top Trumps cards (each describing a cause for the empire’s decline).

They must work as a class to rate, in terms of its importance, these causes. To do this, they use three criteria: Reach, Impact and Timing.

After a quick bit of Maths, it’s time for the game itself: students play in teams of 2 or 3, battling it out to win as many rounds as they can.

A further activity helps students to reach conclusions about the relative importance of different factors/causes in the empire’s decline – before a final task sees students draft letters to the Mughal emperor, suggesting ways in which he might ‘save’ the empire.

This is quite a resource-heavy lesson – but it is definitely worth it!
