This lesson follows on from the previous lesson in the unit by focusing on the story of Jamie Macpherson.
Macpherson was from a Roma background. His mother was Roma, whilst his father was a Scottish landowner.
At the age of just 25 Macpherson faced execution as a criminal.
Students’ task is to work out why Macpherson faced such a harsh punishment: what did he do wrong? Did he deserve his fate?
Through a series of drip-fed clues, students discover more about Jamie Macpherson’s character and personality, as well as his exploits in 17th century Scotland.
Ultimately, they are challenged to determine whether it was Macpherson’s Roma heritage – or the ‘crimes’ he committed – that played the most important role in determining the sentence he received.
