This lesson delves into the experiences of the second main migrant group to be considered in this unit: the Roma people.
In the lesson, students first study the ways in which Roma people were depicted by ‘outsiders’ (non-Roma people) in paintings. Then, how they were treated by the authorities in England.
During a ‘carousel’ activity, they work in groups to make inferences from these sources.
There is a great opportunity for developing literacy skills as students characterise the Roma people’s experiences using a range of adjectives – before justifying their views.
Then, students use Roma proverbs to gain valuable insight into how the Roma people themselves might have felt and experienced life in the period.
Finally, students are challenged to write social media posts to accompany a new educational initiative, outlining what it might have been like for the Roma people who migrated to England in the years 1500-1700.
