8. Year 8: What can we learn from the Taj Mahal about the Mughals?

In this lesson, the focus moves away from the Mughal emperors themselves, and towards one of the most famous pieces of architecture in the world: the Taj Mahal.

Students are first challenged to identify some of the building’s key features, labelling their own copies of the Taj Mahal.

Next,  they are guided through the process of making sophisticated historical inferences about the Mughal Empire and its people.

By the end of the lesson, students will be making basic claims like ‘The Mughals were wealthy and powerful…’ – however, they should also be equipped to take things a little further.

They should be making inferences about the Mughals’ attitudes towards death and the afterlife; about the role and value assigned to skilled engineers and craftsmen in Mughal society; and about Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s ideas, beliefs and emotions.
