The Opposition cocktail party / why didn’t more people oppose the Nazis?

The aims of this enquiry are for students to learn about number of different ‘ordinary’ characters from Nazi Germany who opposed the Nazis. Imagine at the end of the war, some of the individuals who opposed the Nazis met at a party to celebrate. Here we re-create such an imaginary scene. Each student takes on the role of a real opponent. How far did they oppose the Nazi regime? Your characters mingle with each other to find out. The students then record this information in written form.

They then go on to consider why there was such a lack of opposition by looking at some other people from the time. Why did these people choose to say nothing?

This thoughtful enquiry finishes with the modelling, then practicing of that highly valued skill: explanatory writing.
