How far is David’s Marat ‘an awful, beautiful lie?’

Jacques-Louis_David_-_La_Mort_de_MaratThis highly engaging lesson uses the brilliant painting, The Death of Marat by David. Your students have to work out whether or not David was telling the truth about Marat, or whether his work was ‘an awful, beautiful lie?’

They look at the painting and then use evidence to cross reference against the strong message David is trying to get across.

This is best taught as the second of two lessons investigating David’s work. In the first lesson the students unlock the hidden messages of the painting in an engaging way.

This second lesson works just as well as a ‘stand-alone’.
