3. Year 8: What can Babur’s autobiography tell us about the Mughal Empire’s origins?

This lesson focuses on the Mughal Empire’s origins.

It considers the role of Babur in firstly winning a key battle, and then introducing new systems and laws to help consolidate control.

It takes one key source as its focus: the Babur Nama, an autobiographical work partly written by Babur himself.

Students are challenged to make inferences from the source about the reasons for Babur’s success (both in battle and beyond).

They engage with passages from this 500-year-old book, working out what it can tell us about Babur’s background; his character and personality; his success at the Battle of Panipat; and Babur’s later actions to establish control of the Mughal Empire.

Then, they consider what the source has not been able to tell them about Babur and the establishment of the empire. They are asked what  they still want to find out?

Finally, students use their new knowledge to determine whether a series of statements can be supported with evidence.

The lesson provides a great introduction to this new topic, helping students to grasp the significance of Babur’s achievements in establishing a huge, diverse empire.
