This lesson uses an engaging format to help familiarise students with the Huguenots.
Huguenots were a large group of Protestant migrants who arrived in England during the 1700s, following religious persecution in France.
In the lesson, students ‘tour’ the Spitalfields area using an interactive map.
They ‘visit’ a number of key locations to find out about what it was like for the Huguenots in Spitalfields. And, how they impacted on the area.
Student are encouraged to find out about how the Huguenots impacted on work and the economy; culture and the local community; and buildings and architecture.
They also consider the Huguenots’ longer-term impacts on the area.
Finally, a task at the end of the lesson challenges students to put together a ’pop-up’ museum exhibition to commemorate the 18th century Huguenots of Spitalfields.
They are tasked with selecting the best paintings/artefacts to reflect the Huguenot contributions.
