History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

8. Year 8: What was it like to be an Indian migrant in 18th century Britain?

This lesson takes as its focus the Indian men and women who migrated to England.

They worked for British companies and families as they tried to make a future for themselves.

In the lesson, students take part in a game called ‘Journey to England’.

They  compete in small groups to move fastest round the game board. Each student encounters the challenges and opportunities that Indian migrants came up against in the 1700s and 1800s.

Students assume the character of either a trader, an ayah (nanny), a scholar, a soldier, a lascar (sailor) or a performer.

They observe how these characters’ fortunes changed as wider events – in India and in Britain – took place.

Once the game is complete, there is plenty of opportunity for students to reflect on what they’ve learnt about Indian migration in the period – and why the experiences of the Indian migrants varied so greatly.
