This lesson focuses on one of the most well-known and formidable women of the Mughal Empire: Nur Jahan, wife of Emperor Jahangir.
Students are invited to consider their positioning (and the positioning of various modern-day ‘characters’) within a modern-day debate: should Nur Jahan’s tomb be restored?
Is it worth the huge investment that the Pakistan government has set aside for it?
Essentially, was Nur Jahan significant and unique enough to deserve such commemoration?
In the lesson, students are assigned a character – Heritage Worker, Feminist Historian, Local Citizen or Traditional Religious Leader – and asked to gather evidence about Nur Jahan.
Following a card-sort ‘Diamond 9’ activity which helps students refine their thinking further, students are challenged to decide how exactly their characters would respond to the idea of assigning public money to the tomb’s restoration.
