This lesson is based on a unique format.
Students take part in an awards ceremony, determining which Mughal leaders are most deserving of four different awards: Best Builder, Most Tolerant Ruler, Cultural Development Award, and Most Overrated Ruler.
First, they read and research four nominees in each category.
Next they must work in groups to decide on the ‘winner’.
They write acceptance speeches on behalf of their winners, and there is an opportunity for them to present these speeches as part of a ‘ceremony’ at the end of the lesson.
Finally, students are challenged to reach conclusions about the Mughal golden age: who did most to bring it about? Was there just one ‘golden age’, or several? What does ‘golden age’ actually mean: what are its key characteristics?
