Why did Sarah Barnes have to campaign to get her son’s name included on the local war memorial?

 This powerpoint presentation has been made to go alongside the brilliant material provided by The Great War in West Sussex project. The sad tale of John Barnes will undoubtedly capture your student’s attention. Not only do they get to use real archive material in the classroom, they get solve a mystery.

The students slowly work out that Sarah Barnes had to campaign hard, because John was court-marshalled and executed for desertion, despite suffering a mental breakdown. His death warrant was signed by General Haig.
