Why were the Germans so angry about the Treaty of Versailles?

Reichstag Versailles protestThis enquiry focuses evaluating an historical interpretation. Just how good is Anthony Lentin’s article in History Today on the Treaty of Versailles?

We use this photograph of tens of thousands of Germans outside the Reichstag in 1919. Why had they gathered?

Next we look at a short film clip to establish what the Big Three wanted before going on to see what the Treaty finally said.

To collect their thoughts, and their notes your students will use a clever A3  sorting frame.

Now they are armed with the key knowledge, they can go on and evaluate an historians interpretation. You ask them to read Lentin’s short article and rate it on whether it:

  • uses enough precise detail about the terms of the Treaty?
  • covers all of the main points of the Treaty?
  • includes anything that you didn’t know about?
  • writes in an interesting style?

This kind of work is vital as the period study does focus on AO4:  interpretations. Rather than jump through the exam question hoops, this is takes a more engaging approach.
