History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

Could you prosecute the captain of the Slave Ship Zong?

ZongThis enquiry exemplifies our approach to enquiry at Key Stage 3. The lesson fits neatly into any Scheme of Work that includes work on the Atlantic Slave trade and can be downloaded as part of the full Tea Scheme of Work.

The lesson uses the hook of a painting and the story of events on the Zong and also encourages students to tackle ahistorical tendencies; namely to use modern laws and values when faced with “uncomfortable” values from the past.

Using the hook of a mystery painting and the famous story of the Zong, students explore 18th Century attitudes to slavery and then work out why it was so difficult to take on the slave owners at the time.

They then go on to mount their challenge.
