Staged or Real: How can we check which First World War photographs are the real thing?

Picture1This crafty enquiry uses a mystery start. Why was a history teacher asked to leave the Imperial War Museum?  It then requires  your students to use their history skills to decide whether any of the 4 famous photographs showing World War One were actually faked? They cross-reference for a purpose, by looking at other sources about trench life, big guns and ‘going over the top’ . Can they work out whether any of the stills from the film The Battle of the Somme were faked? They use deep thinking for a real reason. Simple and clever!
